What is Image Editing

Image editing is the discipline of improving or modifying images, typically digital photography, using various techniques, tools or software. Even the very best professional photography taken in fantastic, well-considered lighting will require some level of re-touching to get the very best out of the subject.

Re-touching

If your product has picked up minor imperfections in transit such as dust, a scratch or blemish or two then these can be carefully removed in post-production.

Colour versions

If your product is intended to be part of a range of colour variations which may not yet exist in physical form it is possible to create these different colour versions digitally, making range imagery completely consistent.

Enhancement

Products may have all manner of features, textures and technology. Bringing these features to the fore will further explain its functionality and desirability, and therefore increase its marketability. Typically this means either bringing out certain details and areas of a product more clearly or adding in graphical elements. For example, heating or cooling may need to be illustrated by additional effects, a fan may require additional graphics to show directional flow of air or to explain a certain technology which can’t be seen.

Corrections

Occasionally a product may change from mock-up or sample stage to final mass manufacture. Therefore product imagery may need to be digitally edited with these changes made retrospectively to reflect the final product more accurately, such as the addition of a button or removal of text or a change in colour or materials for a certain part of the product.

Logo addition

Similar to general corrections, a product image may be photographed unbranded and therefore will require the brand logo to be added retrospectively. This is common with samples of products which have not yet been brought to full manufacture, just because the sample product doesn’t have the correct branding, this isn’t a barrier to presenting true-to-life images for marketing purposes.

People

Often called “air-brushing”, photos of models have been retouched and improved for almost as long as photography has been around. Skin tones and smoothness, hair, freckles, eyes, teeth, blemishes and imperfections can all be changed to achieved your desired outcome.

Reflections, backgrounds and environment

Image editing doesn’t end with the product itself. Often a product is best shown in a real life setting or even an abstract environment, therefore image editing will logically extend to the product’s surroundings.
